PATNA: The opposition-sponsored Bihar bandh protesting dismal supply of power and unjustified police firing at Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur district affected life in general across the State on Friday. The bandh passed off peacefully. The CPI(M), CPI, RJD, NCP, Congress and the Samata Party jointly enforced the bandh and courted arrest charging that the State government had failed in meeting the basic needs of the people and accused it of shielding senior officials responsible for the unwarranted police firing in which three people were killed. Leaders of these parties claimed that the bandh was a major success and charged that the government had forsaken the people’s mandate. The Lok Jan Shakti Party, which had issued a call for the bandh separately, too made its presence felt. Taken into custodyMore than 10,000 bandh supporters, including State leaders, were taken into custody. The bandh had a good impact even in the Bhagalpur district and particularly, the Kahalgaon subdivision. Shops had their shutters down and vehicle movement was negligible. National highways were blocked and so was the Grand Trunk Road in Rohtas district. Schools had been closed as a precautionary measure and college students forced closure of universities.
