Media report on attack on factory triggers panic Situation created by unauthentic news, say police Moradabad (UP): A large number of people have been leaving Gajraula in Uttar Pradesh for ‘safer’ places after a media report about the possibility of a terrorist attack in a chemical factory triggered panic in the town. After the report of a possible terrorist strike on the Jubilant Organosys appeared in a newspaper, rumours spread rapidly in the town, with people fearing that if such an attack really takes place, it will lead to a ‘Bhopal-type’ situation. Many residents of the town and nearby villages have fled their homes, officials said adding, they have been trying their best to dispel rumours and stop the exodus. “The situation has been created by the publication of the unauthentic news. We are doing our best to normalise the situation,” J P Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police Beena Bhookesh said. A meeting attended by police and civil officials, political leaders, factory administration and local residents was held here on Thursday night to discuss the issue. A factory official said all necessary security measures are in place in the unit. However, fear prevails among residents of the town. “An attack on the chemical unit can lead to a catastrophe like the Union Carbide mishap in Bhopal and affect villages within 40 km radius. That is why we are leaving for Delhi,” a villager, who did not give his name, said. -- PTI
