Do not talk to Kerala on dam issue: Vaiko

Calls end to sand smuggling

THENI: The State Government should not hold talks with Kerala to safeguard the legal protection given by the Supreme Court to Tamil Nadu on Periyar Dam issue, advised Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko.
He was delivering a special address at a farmers’ conference held here on Thursday evening.
The State Government’s consent to take part in the talks on Periyar Dam would certainly affect legal protection.
“From the beginning, Kerala neither responded to our pleas nor obeyed the Supreme Court order. On the contrary, it spread false information about the dam and panic among people in Kerala. It had gone to the level of constructing a new dam near the existing dam and opened an office. But the Tamil Nadu government has not reacted to their actions that were against the interests of farmers in southern districts,” he charged.
Sand smuggling to Kerala was another sensitive issue that posed grave threat to survival of farmers.
The British Government had promulgated a law, banning sandmining in rivers and water resources in 1884 to prevent illegal sand mining even as there were no such anti-social activities, he recalled.
Despite direction from Supreme Court and High Court, the government did not take steps to prevent it.
