Akash Wagh claims title

Principal Correspondent

KOLKATA: Akash Wagh claimed his first ITF junior title beating compatriot Sudanwa Sitaram 6-2, 6-3 in an all-Indian boys’ final here at the DKS Sports Complex on Friday.

Sitaram, coming into the tournament winning the grade II ITF junior title in Gurgaon last week, was completely outplayed in a rain-interrupted final.

The boys’ final was the only event that could be completed as unseasonal downpour held up the action forcing the organisers to postpone three other finals — girls’ singles and doubles and boys’ doubles.

The boys’ final interestingly featured the same opponents who played the singles final of the Gurgaon event.

But this time there was a reversal of roles as eighth-seeded Wagh beat Sitaram to the title.

The result: Boys’ final: Akash Wagh bt Sudanwa Sitaram 6-2, 6-3.
