Four share lead

NEW DELHI: Grandmasters Sandipan Chanda and G.N. Gopal beat lower-rated rivals with black pieces to reach 2.5 points after three rounds of the Gibtelecom chess tournament at Gibraltar on Thursday.

Chanda and Gopal are part of a 21-player pack in the fifth spot. Alexander Beliavsky (Slovenia), Varuzhan Akopian (USA), Hristos Banikas (Greece) and Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria) lead with three points each.

The results (involving Indians): Third round: D. Harika (1.5) lost to Alexander Areshchenko (Ukr, 2.5); Mouthun Ly (Aus, 1.5) lost to Sandipan Chanda (2.5); Leonid Kritz (Ger, 2.5) bt Aarthie Ramaswamy (1.5); Daniel Larsson (Swe, 1.5) lost to G.N. Gopal (2.5); Line Jin Jorgensen (Nor, 1) lost to N. Srinath (2); Adrian Mathews (Eng, 0.5) lost to Kruttika Nadig (1.5).
