Jitender advances

BANGKOK: Flyweight Jitender Kumar and middleweight Vijender sailed into the second round in the 1st Asian Olympic qualifying boxing tournament here on Friday.

Jitender (51kg) defeated Vietnam’s Viet Tran 17-9, but suffered a cut on his eyebrow during the bout, putting his participation in doubt.

“He has got a deep cut on the eyebrow and his participation will depend on how he recovers by morning,” said the team coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu.

Jitender has his second round bout lined up on Saturday, which meant he has very little time for recovery.

In the 75kg category, Vijender defeated Jasur Qurdanov of Tajikistan 24-16.

About 141 boxers from 28 countries are participating in the first Olympic qualifier and are chasing 19 spots for Beijing. The competition is being held in 10 weight categories from 48kg to 91kg. The Olympic quota place for super-heavyweight class (plus-91kg) will be up for grabs in the second qualifier in Kazakhstan in March.
