Thiruvananthapuram
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Accepting Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan’s complaint that election of delegates from Thiruvananthapuram for the State party conference being held at Kottayam from February 11 to 14 was marked by factionalism, the CPI(M) State leadership has decided to review the list of conference delegates. The decision of the party State secretariat, which met here on Friday in the presence of party all-India general secretary Prakash Karat, follows strong intervention from the CPI(M) Polit Bureau, which wanted the list of delegates to be reviewed and made more consensual in nature. The newly constituted CPI(M) district committee would meet here on Saturday to consider the matter. A meeting of delegates to the Thiruvananthapuram district conference is mostly likely to be convened for a decision on the lines of the Polit Bureau directive, party sources said. In the fiercely contested election of delegates to the State conference, the section in the party supporting CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan had got 33 out of the 36 delegates chosen from their camp. This was done after the two sides had earlier decided to share the delegates, the section supporting Mr.Vijayan getting 22 and those supporting Mr. Achuthanandan getting 14 delegates. When this consensus panel was presented to the district conference delegates, nine more persons entered the fray. Similar contest was seen in the election of the new district committee as well. This had given rise to strong protests from the Chief Minister’s camp and had resulted in several complaints being sent to the Polit Bureau. The decision of the State secretariat indicated that the Polit Bureau had taken a stern stand on the issue, as it had done in the case of S. Ajayakumar, MP, who was initially excluded from the Ottappalam area committee. On the basis of a directive from the Polit Bureau, delegates to the Ottappalam area conference were reconvened and a formal decision taken to include Mr. Ajayakumar. Although Mr. Achuthanandan and his supporters had complained about the election of the Thiruvananthapuram district committee members as well, it is likely to be taken up only later.
