International aqua show

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The city will play host to yet another edition of the international aqua show from February 1.

The India International Aqua Show 2008, organised by the Fisheries Department, will bring to Kochi ornamental fish varieties from various parts of the country and abroad. The venue of the five-day show is the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor.

The previous aqua shows had attracted a large number of aquarium enthusiasts to Kochi. During the past events, visitors could be seen patiently waiting in long queues for taking a look at the beautiful world unfolding in aquariums.

The show comes to Kochi at a time when the State is all set to take a giant leap in ornamental fish industry. The aqua technology park coming up at Kadungalloor will serve as the hub of ornamental fish production and export in Kerala. An international seminar on ornamental fish breeding, farming and trade will be held from February 2 to 4 as part of the show. The organisers expect experts from Malaysia, Singapore, the U.S., Sri Lanka and Indonesia to take part in discussions on areas such as breeding and rearing technology of ornate fishes, hybridisation, biotechnological applications for value addition and breeding technology and technological innovations in aquarium keeping.

A special interactive session on the aqua technology park will be held on February 2. This session is expected to provide an opportunity for the present and potential stakeholders of the newly floated Kerala Aqua Ventures International Ltd. (KAVIL) on various trade and investment opportunities available with the company.

A buyer-seller meeting of ornamental fishes will be held on February 4. Major ornamental fish importers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the U.S. are expected to interact with farmers and various stakeholders of KAVIL at the meeting, organisers say. Details may be had on Ph: 0484 238 3210.
