occasion of honour: Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi arriving at the venue to inspect the guard of honour at the Republic Day celebrations in Puducherry on Saturday. PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Mukut Mithi on Saturday appealed to people to strive to make the Union Territory “a model State” in the country. In his address on the occasion of the Republic Day celebrations, Mr. Mithi said though the Union Territory had achieved considerable progress in several fields, it was yet to “alleviate poverty” and achieve “growth with social justice.” On development programmes initiated by the Government, he said the administration accorded top priority to agriculture and allied sectors. A number of initiatives to promote agriculture sector had been taken up to achieve four per cent annual growth through enhanced productivity, crop diversification and building farm infrastructure, he said. Mr. Mithi said a scheme for “hi-tech horticulture through precision farming” had been formulated to improve farm management. The precision farming would help in the improvement of farm sector. The Government was in the process of implementing the Centrally-sponsored scheme from the Agricultural Technology Management Agency with an objective to overhaul extension services and to improve technology dissemination methodologies in agriculture and allied sectors, Mr. Mithi said. The State Land Board had started the preparation of perspective Land Use Plan 2015 and 2025 in collaboration with National Bureau of Soil Survey, Bangalore, for optimum management of land resources. Also, the Government had taken up hydrology projects at an outlay of Rs 13.18 crore with World Bank assistance, he said. About infrastructure development projects, he said the Central Government had exempted Union Territory from sharing the cost of broad gauge conversion project between Karaikal and Nagore. Earlier, Mr. Mithi hoisted the National Flag and inspected a guard of honour on the Upplam Sports ground in the presence of Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Speaker R. Radhakrishnan and Cabinet Ministers. He also inspected a marchpast by various contingents. He also presented the President of India Police medial for meritorious service to Inspector of Police, Police Training School, Thiruvengadam Raman and Arumugam Subramanian, Police Driver. Mr. Mithi also gave away Lieutenant Governor’s medal for Extra Ordinary Service to Sub Inspector of Police Anthonisamy Francis and to Head Constable Narayanan Ramasamy of Maducarai Out post. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy hoisted the National flag in the Assembly complex.
