Thiruvananthapuram
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The delegates to the CPI(M) Thiruvananthapuram district conference held here in the last week of December would be reconvened on January 29 to carry out the party Polit Bureau decision to review the composition of delegates to the CPI(M) State conference to be held at Kottayam from February 11 to 14. At the January 29 meeting, the 11 persons who had been defeated in the contest engineered by one section of the party at the district conference would be formally chosen to represent the district at the State conference along with the 25 others whose names had figured in the consensus list prepared earlier. This would result in the 11 persons who had contested and won in the election being left out. Polit Bureau directiveThe CPI(M) decision to reconvene the district conference delegates was taken by the newly constituted party district committee, which met here on Saturday, in deference to the directive to that effect from the Polit Bureau. The district committee meeting was attended by party State secretariat members T. Sivadasa Menon and M.V. Govindan Master. First instanceThis is for the first time that the list of delegates from any district is being reviewed. This has happened only because of the Polit Bureau’s insistence on corrective measures being taken to stem the tide of factionalism in the State CPI(M). Although there is a demand for revamp of the district committee as well, any such attempt would have to wait till the party conferences are over. In a keenly contested election, the official faction stated to owe allegiance to the CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan had wrest almost total control of the district committee. If there is a review of the composition of the district committee in Thiruvananthapuram, there could be a similar review in Kollam as well. In Kollam, it was the rival faction stated to owe allegiance to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan who had gained full control of the district committee.
