Cultural pageantry marks R-Day

Showcasing culture: Schoolchildren performing during the 59th Republic Day celebrations at Manekshaw Parade Ground in Bangalore on Saturday.

BANGALORE: A good turnout and cultural pageantry by schoolchildren and Maratha Light Infantry Regiment marked the 59th Republic Day celebrations at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground here on Saturday.

Nearly 2,000 schoolchildren danced for 42 minutes to the melody and rhythm of patriotic songs. Elaborate security arrangements were in place for the celebrations.

This time, there was variety in the cultural programmes and more number of schoolchildren participated in them compared to the previous year’s celebrations. Last year, 1,450 schoolchildren participated in the event. Students from government schools in Kolar, Chickaballapur and Davanagere districts and from the schools run by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike participated.

Contingents from the Indian Air Force, Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), City Armed Reserve, Home Guards, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme and Bharat Seva Dal participated in the march-past.

The programme began with Governor Rameshwar Thakur’s address at 9 a.m. Students of Sri Siddaganga Vidya School, Davangere, and Government High Primary School and Government High School, Sheshadripuram, Bangalore, walked away with the first prize in the cultural programme category for their dance “Samarpane” (dedication), depicting the First War of Independence and Mangal Pandey, who rebelled against his commanders. As many as 600 schoolchildren participated in it.

As many as 450 students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika schools in Kolar and Chickaballapur districts presented “Idu Ellara Abhiyana”, a dance programme, and received the second prize. They depicted several educational programmes launched by the Centre and the State Government. As many as 400 students of the Government Higher Primary School, Begur, Bangalore South, presented a dance programme, “Punya Bhoomi Bharata”, and 500 students of the BBMP School in Srirampura presented “Sankramana” and bagged the third prize.

Personnel of the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, Belgaum, demonstrated “Malla Kamba” techniques for which they bagged a special prize from the Governor.

Other contingents and schools that won prizes in the Republic Day Parade are Group 1: Indian Air Force, first; KSRP, second; and City Reserve Police Force (South), third. Group 2: Fire Wardens’ Organisation, first; Fire and Emergency Services, second and Traffic Wardens, third. Group 3: Students’ Association for Road Safety (SARS) of Carmel School, first; SARS of Clarence School, second; and Red Cross Society, third. Group 4: NSS (Girls), first; NSS (Boys), second; and Bharat Seva Dal, third. Group 5: Ramana Maharshi School for the Blind, first; Samarthanam Trust for Disabled, second; and Hamsadwani School for the Deaf, third. Group 6: Students’ Association for Road Safety of Little Florence School, first; Border Security Force, second; and KSRP, third.
