PALAKKAD: The Eastern Forest Circle, Olavakkode, has formed Fire Protection Committees in its five forest divisions as part of implementing the Wildfire-Free Year programme of the State Forest Department. The Fire Protection Committees are in Nemmara, Mannarkkad, Nilambur North, Nilambur South and Palakkad Divisions of the Circle. The forest areas have been divided into a number of units and each unit entrusted to Vana Samrakshana Samithis (VSS). In each VSS, a 15-member committee has been formed for fire protection work. In areas with no VSS, the work has been entrusted to Fire Blocks. There is also a 15-member peoples committee to prevent wild fires. Conservator of Forest, Eastern Circle, N.K. Sasidharan said that the members of the committees would be given technical advice and financial help by the Forest Department. He said that in this circle the fire protection work was entrusted with 113 Fire Protection Committees.
