Former students of Maharaja’s College will institute a scholarship for students pursuing pure science courses. KOCHI: Former students of Maharaja’s College will be launching a scholarship for students pursuing pure science courses. It was decided at a get-together of old students of the Special B.Sc. course held here on Sunday. The special course in science was introduced in 1966 with a focus on promoting pure science. Many students had joined the course leaving the professional courses, said V. Unnikrishnan, one of the secretaries of the Maharaja’s College Special B.Sc. Old Students’ Forum. But, the university discontinued the course after 1968. Hence, there are only three batches of students in the course who passed out in 1969, 1970 and 1971. The scholarship of Rs.1,000 for a meritorious student who requires financial help will be identified by the Department of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany and Zoology. The forum felt that as there was a rush to join professional courses, science subjects took a backseat. Only those students who cannot afford to join professional courses take up pure science subjects. The scholarship will be a token of encouragement for the students who take up these courses. The Forum members, numbering about 150, will contribute towards the scholarship. “We also plan to introduce certain activities such as seminars on science subjects,” said Mr. Unnikrishnan. It will be decided at later meetings. This was the second meeting organised by the forum. Prominent among those present at the meeting were Valsala G. Kutty, joint secretary, Union Government, who inaugurated the get-together. M.P. Sukumaran Nayar, Managing Director, Travancore Cochin Chemicals Ltd, presided. At the function, teachers like M.K. Prasad, Ganga Devi Thamburan and Prof. Sudha Jacob Koshy were honoured. K.K. Vijaykumar, former Additional Chief Secretary; B.V. Jayalakshmi, former civil surgeon; Gracy Idoop; chartered accountant Vedanga R. Prabhu; Aruna R. Pisharoty; K. Raghnandan, BSNL AGM; Mathew Paul and E.M. Thomas spoke. P.R. Sudhakaran, Dean, Kerala University; V.V. Jayendranath, Chief Commissioner of Central Excise, Chennai; P.C. John, Senior General Manager, Federal Bank, Aluva, are members of the forum.
