dated January 28, 1958: Republic Day

Tens of thousands of people watched the President Dr. Rajendra Prasad take the salute at a spectacular Republic Day parade of the Armed Forces in New Delhi on January 26. Four thousand men of the Army, Navy and Air Force marched past the saluting base to the music of massed bands and cheers of the crowds. They were followed by a pageant procession in which tableaux gave a fleeting glimpse of regional cultures and typical scenes, school boys and girls in bright uniforms marched with gusto and folk dancers stepped along dancing and singing. The climax for the parade was provided by 74 jet aircraft of the Indian Air Force which streaking in formations dipped low over the saluting base as they flew past. A Toofani, trailing clouds of red, white and green smoke, traced the tricolour across the sky. The parade and the procession were greeted by dense crowds all along the five-mile beflagged route from Vijay Chowk near the Secretariat to Red Fort.
