This Day That Age
President Rajendra Prasad has awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest award, given for exceptional work for the advancement of art, literature and science and in recognition of public service of the highest order, to Dr. Keshav Karve, 99-year-old social worker and educationist of Poona. The list of Republic Day awards announced on January 26 includes 16 awards of Padma Bhushan and 19 of Padma Shri. There are five women among the recipients. There was no Padma Vibhushan, the second highest award, this year. Dr. Karve joins seven recipients of Bharat Ratna of previous years – Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, Dr. Radhakrishnan, Dr. C.V. Raman, Dr. Bhagwan Das, Dr. M. Visvesvaraya, Prime Minister Nehru and Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant.
