Fighting corruption

The article “Fighting the cancer of corruption” (Jan. 25) was relevant to the present global context, particularly the Asian countries. The pace at which corruption is proliferating in both the public and private sector is a serious cause for concern. Bribe-taking is a routine affair in government departments. It penetrates all levels from top to bottom. But those who accept or demand bribe are not the only ones to blame for the rise in corruption. We, the people, are equally liable.

R.D. Sharma,

Hisar

Fighting corruption will become possible only when people learn to be content with their material possessions. The desire to possess more and the longing for luxuries drive people to crave for more money than they can earn. Laws can do little to eradicate this social evil. Don’t we already have umpteen channels to complain against the corrupt?

Rettavayal S. Krishnaswamy,

Chennai

Corruption is omnipresent and omnipotent. There was a time when demanding and offering bribes were considered shameful. Not any more. How do you fight something that has found acceptance as part and way of life?

S. Varadarajan,

Pallathur
