Saharsa (Bihar): At least 55 people, including 18 policemen suffered injuries in stone-throwing by a crowd of 7,000 odd people, leading to lathicharge at a folk musical programme at a stadium here, police sources said on Sunday. Soon after the folk-musical programme of famous Devi group was opened inside the stadium on Saturday night on the occasion of Republic day, over 7,000 people, curious to watch the programme, collected outside the stadium and tried to force their way into the jam-packed stadium, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Saharsa town) Rajkumar Yadav said. As they were prevented from entering the stadium by the security men as all the tickets were sold, the crowd went on the rampage. They indulged in heavy-stone throwing and damaged two police vehicles and several motorcycles parked outside, Mr. Yadav said, adding 18 policemen including the officer in-charge of the town police station Rajeshwar Singh suffered injuries in the stone-throwing. As the situation became uncontrollable, police baton- charged the mob in which around 38 people suffered minor to serious injuries, he said. The crowd later dispersed, he claimed and said while Mr. Singh was hospitalised because of head injuries, other policemen were discharged after first-aid at local hospitals. Twelve people were taken into custody, the SDPO said. — PTI
