Wanted solutions

Sir, — In spite of being home to number of prestigious educational institutions, multinational companies, the Chiranjeevi Layout, Hebbal, Bangalore, lacks basic amenities. Pedestrians find it difficult to cross the Hebbal-Kempapura stretch of national highway near the dairy gate, since heavy vehicles ply there at high speed.

Many accidents have occurred on the stretch in the past. Schoolchildren and elderly people are the worst hit. It is requested that a speed breaker is created near dairy gate at the earliest.

The residents of the area also face hardship owing to poor roads and drainage system. The authorities are requested to address these problems at the earliest.

S.Raju,

Excellent report

Sir, — The report titled “Exploitation of a different kind” in The Hindu (January 21, 2008), is an excellent write-up and a welcome departure from otherwise media-hyped reports on the lives of commercial sex workers.

The fact that it highlighted the plight of the poor women, generally victims of unhealthy media exposure, will hopefully create greater awareness on the need for sensitivity to be shown by the people.

We hope you will continue to report on similar problems with the professionalism thus shown.

Arvind Narrain,

Alternative Law Forum, Bangalore

II

Sir, — The report has helped uphold the rights of commercial sex workers. We thank the paper for its support on issues pertaining to social justice.

Narasimhamurthy,

Janasahayog, Bangalore

III

Sir, — I found the report highly appreciable for its critical analysis of the deplorable incident. It is regrettable that our present legal system cannot book perpetrators, who stand to gain from such inhuman practices. I congratulate the paper for its rights-based perspective in the article. The Hindu has helped me contextualise situations faced by vulnerable people and has contributed to a better understanding of such issues.

Kshithij Urs,

Action Aid, Bangalore

IV

Sir, — We are an organisation working to protect the rights of commercial sex workers

and to help root out violence against women. We commend the report which had rightfully brought to public notice the vulnerability faced by various sections of society.
