THENI: Village panchayats should use non-conventional energy to scale down burgeoning electricity expenditure, which wiped out a major portion of funds allotted to panchayats, according to Collector Har Sahay Meena. He was addressing a gram sabha meeting at Kokilapuram in Uthamapalayam union on Saturday. “Representatives of local bodies must start using renewable energy sources such as biogas, solar power and wind energy to meet their power requirements.” Technology was available to generate power even from wastes. Such efforts would not only reduce production costs but also help the municipality dispose of solid wastes safely and keep villages clean and tidy. The village would have a 60,000-litre overhead tank and toilet facilities under the total sanitation programme soon. A retention wall would be constructed near the Mullaperiyar river for convenience of washer men. A veterinary doctor would be posted for the veterinary clinic. Over Rs.1.6 crore worth of development works, including installation streetlights, desliting of tanks, strengthening river and tank bunds and rehabilitation of irrigation water sources, were being executed in the panchayats under various central and state government schemes. The district administration would take special care in extending facilities to AIDS or HIV-infected patients in the district. Later, the Collector gave away welfare aid worth Rs.3.86 lakh and inspected a site meant for construction of the retention wall with washing facility.
