Broiler price stabilises in Palladam region
Staff Reporter
TIRUPUR: The broiler price that nose-dived after the outbreak of avian flu in West Bengal has recovered in the last one week, giving the poultry industry in the Palladam region a breather.
The farm gate price hit an all-time low of Rs.20 a kg a week ago at Palladam and Pongalur. Industry sources put the average production cost of a broiler bird at Rs. 35 a kg. “The situation is improving in the past five or six days. The price is increasing by Rs.1 or Rs.1.50 a day. It touched Rs.30 on Sunday,” R. Lakshmanan, chairman of the Palladam-based Broiler Coordination Committee told The Hindu.
The consumption did not come down, but the panic sale had put poultry farmers on the mat.
Mr. Lakshmanan hoped that the price would recover in the coming days, as an outbreak of the disease was ruled out in Tamil Nadu. “Ours is an agro-based industry. Hundreds of small and marginal farmers involved in it do not have sufficient funds to tide over the losses,” he said.
“If the price slips down from Rs.35 a kg, poultry farms will incur losses,” he said.
