Sunshine brings cheer in Shimla

SHIMLA: Bright sunshine on Sunday led to a considerable improvement in the constantly dipping day temperature in Shimla.

The weather cleared on Sunday after a mild to moderate snowfall in high altitude areas on Saturday evening. Even the State Capital and adjoining hill resorts of Kufri, Fagu, Mashobara and Narkanda received about 4 to 15 cms of snow in the evening.

There are also reports of moderate snowfall in the tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.

The minimum temperature in Shimla hovered between minus 2.5 to minus 3 degree Celsius, while maximum temperature improved and rose to 9 degree Celsius on Sunday.

Lower regions of State remained under grip cold wave, recording sub zero temperatures.

Tourists from the plains have once again started coming to the hills after fresh snowfall on Saturday. A beeline of tourist vehicles were seen going to Kufri from Shimla.

Freezing cold sweeps Punjab, Haryana

A day after minimum temperature recorded a slight increase at some places in Punjab and Haryana, severe cold wave was back on Sunday in the two States.

Amritsar was the coldest place in the plains recording a low of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, seven below normal, the Meteorological Department said here.

Biting cold kept the minimum at Ludhiana down to 0.1 degrees Celsius, seven below normal while the low at Patiala was 1.7 C, down six degrees.

The minimum at Chandigarh also dropped since on Saturday to settle at 3.6 C, down three degrees.

In Haryana, Narnaul was the coldest place recording a low of 1.3 C, four below normal while the minimum at Karnal was 2.4 C, down five.

Rohtak recorded a low of 3.2 C, four below normal while the minimum at Hisar settled at 4 degrees, down two degrees.

Cold wave conditions continue to sweep Rajasthan with three districts touching almost sub-zero temperature. The minimum temperature recorded at Pilani was 0.1 degrees Celsius, Sriganganagar settled at 0.2 degree Celsius whereas the mercury dipped to 1.2 Celsius in Churu, the Met department said.

The temperature, however recorded a slight increase in Ajmer, Jaipur, Kota and Jodhpur, they said.

The mercury dipped in Bikaner to 1.2 C from yesterday’s 5.5 C while Mount Abu continued to reel under a minimum of one degrees Celsius. Jaisalmer recorded a minimum of 2.3 degrees, Dabok 5.5 degrees and Jodhpur 6.4 degrees.

Some respite from the cold is expected when the western disturbance crosses the State tomorrow, they said.
