Measures to prevent bird flu

BHUBANESWAR: Although no case of bird flu had been reported from any part of Orissa till Sunday, the authorities have initiated a series of measures to prevent an outbreak of the disease in the State.

The authorities have banned import of poultry from neighbouring West Bengal and are taking action against violating the restrictions.

The administration in the districts of Mayurbhanj and Balasore have been asked to maintain a close watch on the situation and prevent illegal import of poultry from the neighbouring state where the bird flu virus was spreading to newer areas.

Around 70 veterinary teams have also been pressed into service in Mayurbhanj and Balasore to check if there were any signs of the presence of the bird flu virus, according to Bishnupada Sethi, State Director of Fisheries and Animal Resource Development.

Policemen have been deployed at as many as 15 entry points to West Bengal in Balasore district to prevent people from illegally procuring poultry from the neighbouring State.

Officials of the Veterinary Department have also been posted at those entry points, according to Balasore Superintendent of Police J.K. Jethwa.

The authorities have so far seized three trucks carrying eggs and poultry birds from West Bengal.

Principal Secretary of the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department Hrushikesh Panda is camping at the district headquarter town of Balasore to oversee the measures initiated by the department to prevent to disease spread to the State from West Bengal.

The District Collectors of all the 30 districts have also been asked to remain alert and draw samples if flu-like symptoms were reported from any area.
