BANGALORE: A chance discovery of a stone slab near the upcoming underpass at Cauvery Junction has led the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to uncover encroachment of land worth nearly Rs. 4 crore. Workers stumbled upon the stone slab when they were trying to repair the water lines that had been cut open. The palike was unaware of the encroachment of around 2,500 square feet of land by a commercial establishment on Sankey Road. The establishment had covered the drain and placed mosaic tiles on the encroached area, the palike said. “When we were fixing the water lines, we came across a slab that was used to cover drains in earlier times. We investigated and found that a well-known commercial establishment had encroached upon the drain and the footpath also,” K.S. Krishna Reddy, Chief Engineer (Roads), told The Hindu. On Sunday, BBMP workmen removed the encroachment which hindered the progress of the much-delayed work on the underpass. “The space recovered is worth Rs. 4 crore. This way, we have recovered more than the cost of the underpass project,” Mr. Krishna Reddy said.
