Pay wards

The pay ward in the Government General Hospital is most welcomed by middle and lower middle class people as they cannot afford costly treatment in private nursing homes and specialty hospitals run in the name of corporate houses or trusts.

At the same time, it is all the more important that the poor and downtrodden patients are also taken care of by the doctors concerned in Government Hospitals by rendering better medical aid besides eliminating bribery and corruption, particularly among the lower-level staff.

A pathetic bus stand

The mofussil bus stand (SETC Unit) at Tambaram is badly maintained. The authorities have provided four broken masonry benches, one fan, an uneven flooring, land asbestos roofing, partly thatched. No proper seating arrangements, no space to keep luggage and no toilet facilities are in place. The bus stand is so unhygienic that users find it almost impossible to use it.

The visitors have to bear the obnoxious urine smell emanating from the adjoining open ground. Moreover, the people are littering the already cramped space with discarded eatables and fruit wastes. That this is the busiest bus stand next to the CMBT at Koyambedu shows utter bankruptcy of thought on the part of authorities.

Almost, all bus stands are in bad shape. I would suggest that open urination, smoking, and spitting at the public utilities such as railway stations, bus stands, public health centres, airports etc. should be totally curbed. All public utilities should be provided with well maintained public toilets and dustbins. Penalty should be imposed on offenders on the spot.

A cleaner and greener Chennai, the avowed objective of the Tamil Nadu Government, will remain only on paper if stringent measures are not taken to keep all bus stands clean in the city.

Waiting time for LPG supply

The Indian Oil Corporation has fixed 21 days as the time-limit for supply of LPG cylinders for domestic use. In big families and joint families like mine, with 6 or more members, a cylinder lasts for only 15 or 16 days. For the rest of the days, we have to suffer, as firewood cannot be used in most of the city houses. Kerosene supply is also very restricted.

In view of this, the IOC is requested to kindly reduce the time-limit for supply to 15 or 16 days to benefit bigger families.

Need for streetlights

The Complaint Cell in the Corporation advised me to take up the issue of poor illumination at the stretch between the Arumbakkam bus stand and the Koyambedu bus stand with Krishnamurthy, Zonal Officer, Corporation of Chennai.

The Zonal Officer had assured me that he would look into the issue.

As the construction of a flyover at Koyambedu might get delayed by a year or two, immediate action to install street- lights on this stretch would be appreciated.

Clarification

This is with reference to the traffic congestion caused by the collapsed manhole at Kotturpuram Bridge, published in The Hindu dated 27-12-2007.

In this regard, it is informed that a sewer manhole at Gandhi Mandapam Road near Kotturpuram Bridge suddenly collapsed on December 23, 2007. This manhole is located near the Kotturpuram Sewage Pumping Station, having 20 feet depth.

Rectification work has commenced on a war-footing and the collapsed manhole portion was excavated from the middle of the road with prior permission from the traffic personnel. The soil condition was poor and required shoring to avoid sliding of earth. This additional work involved has extended the period up to January 5, 2008 for completion of work. The top portion of the trench is concretised and the traffic is now moving smoothly.

Autorickshaw problem

The only way to solve the autorickshaw problem is to make every MLA, councillor and other representatives responsible for making autorickshaws run on meters in their respective areas. They can report to the traffic police about the erring drivers.

The Transport Minister should personally intervene to enforce rules as in other States.

Change of nomenclature

The Tamil version of St. Thomas Mount in the nameboard and in the tickets at the railway station continues as “Parangimalai.”

The Tamil Nadu Government has changed the version as “Thuya Thomaiyar Malai” in all places such as police station, MTC buses, offices etc.

We, therefore, suggest to the Southern Railway administration to follow the Tamil version.
