Kidney racket: steps on to issue red-corner notice against kingpin

Search on for 2 more doctors; teams formed to raid suspected hideouts

NEW DELHI: The Gurgaon police have initiated the process for issuance of a red corner notice against Amit Kumar, the alleged kingpin of the kidney transplant racket, on suspicion that he could try to flee the country.

The police have circulated photographs of Amit and his accomplices and alerted airports across the country. However, they fear that he will still make attempts to escape through illegal channels using his foreign contacts.

It is learnt that apart from Amit, Jeevan and Sharaj, the police are on the lookout for two more doctors.

According to a senior police officer, the doctors are Rajesh and Satya Prakash Gupta.

Over half-a-dozen teams have been formed to conduct raids at their suspected hideouts. The Haryana police are seeking help from other agencies to track down the suspects.

No clues yet

The Uttar Pradesh police conducted raids at Moradabad on Sunday, but are still clueless about the whereabouts of the main culprit.

“We will get to know more about the activities of the gang from the interrogation of Upender and the other five accused,” said the police officer, adding that the Mumbai police team was yet to arrive in Gurgaon to investigate links of the kidney racket in the country’s commercial capital.

Donors’ statement

Three of the “donors” admitted to Gurgaon’s Civil Hospital have given their statement to the police. The police said the kidneys of the three men were forcibly removed by the accused after they were sedated.

During the raids, the police collected documents revealing details of the bank accounts of Upender, a doctor who was arrested along with his driver Harpal and four alleged agents — Pappu, Naushad and Gyasuddin of Meerut and Jagdish of Ballabgarh. Transactions carried out through those accounts will be investigated.

The gang is suspected to have carried out about 500 illegal kidney transplants.
