Chennai: IOB defeated Indian Bank 76-51 in the men’s final of the All Star State-level basketball tournament, at the Corporation Grounds, Venkatnarayana Road, on Sunday. In the women’s final, Southern Railway beat Madras Nationals Basketball Club 65-29. IOB dominated in the first two quarters. John. D. Plato opened the account for IOB, after which it had more possession and better ball control. Indian Bank set up chances, but failed to convert them. Plato did the bulk of the scoring for IOB with 20 points, and played a dominant role upfront. Indian Bank’s defence faltered in crucial moments. Indian Bank played better in the latter stages of the match. The passing improved and the margin was narrowed; but IOB scored consistently to register a convincing win. In the women’s final, Geethu Anna Jose played a crucial role with 15 points for Southern Railway. Mr. Arcot. N. Veeraswami, Minister for Electricity, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, was the chief guest, while Mr. K.P.P. Samy, Minister of Fisheries, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, gave away the prizes. The results (finals): Men: IOB 76 (John. D. Plato 20, Vineeth Revi Mathew 14, Chandrasekar 17, Dinesh 12) bt Indian Bank 51 (M. Puvaneshwaran 13, Amarnath Gopi 14, A. Thangadurai 11). Women: Southern Railway 65 (Kokila 10, Adhirai 10, Neena Hareendran 11, Geethu Anna Jose 15, Anitha 11) bt Madras Nationals Basketball Club 29 (Vidya Mani 12, Sunitha Suren 10). Munir Sait for Olympic qualifierFormer Olympian and a member of the Competitions Committee in the International Hockey Federation, Munir Sait has been nominated as the Tournament Director for the first of the three Olympic qualifiers to come off at North Shore City, Auckland, from February 2 to 9. He was also the TD for the Asia-Oceania tournament which determined the automatic qualifier at Brisbane last year. Six teams are the fray for the one spot to the Beijing Olympics from this cluster. The teams fighting for that important place are New Zealand, Argentina, France, Ireland, Trinidad and Tobacco and United States. Goalless drawIntegral Coach Factory (ICF) and Sports Authority of India (SAI) played out a goalless draw in a CFA senior division football match here on Sunday. Earlier in a first division match, DB-Annai Youth, thanks to a brace from Pavala Vannan, defeated Chennai Port Trust 2-0. Easy for BharathidasanBharathidasan University blanked Punjab Agricultural University 3-0 in a league encounter of the all-India inter zone inter-university hockey tournament in Thanjavaur on Sunday. Saravanan, Prabhu and Ethiraj were the scorers.
