Cooperative Medical College set to get recognition

KOCHI: The Cooperative Medical College at Kalamassery is all set to get permanent recognition this year. The Medical Council of India has recommended the Union Ministry of Health to grant recognition to the college.

The college authorities have received a copy of the letter forwarded by the council. The letter from the Ministry is awaited.

The college was started in 2000 under the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education with 50 per cent of the seats going to students selected from the merit list of the medical entrance examinations conducted by the State government.

The first two batches of students who had passed out from the college were not able to register as doctors and start practice, as the college did not have permanent recognition.

A medical institution should clear mandatory annual inspection for five years before permanent recognition is granted.

The college had failed to get recognition for two years and could admit only half the sanctioned strength of students during one academic year.

This was because the college campus had failed to come up as promised by the cooperative academy at the time of starting the college. Classes were held in makeshift quasi-governmental institutions and a cooperative hospital.

The students had to depend on a government hospital for clinical practice.
