Avinashi Road work

Eventually conversion of the busy Avinashi Road to a six-lane road is coming true. I wish to compliment the contractors for swiftly carrying out the work. However, it is strange that the work is being carried out on this busy road during peak traffic hours while it comes to a standstill in the night. It should be done between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. when the traffic flow is not heavy and the inconvenience to the travelling public is negligible.

Ban jallikattu

Even the court is unable to put down jallikattu. If every citizen realises the cruelty involved and refrains from encouraging, attending and sponsoring, jallikattu will vanish overnight. So long as there are citizens to encourage it, it will go on.

Ban on plastics

This refers to the report ‘Ban on disposable plastic items’ (Jan. 22). The Corporation Council’s resolution banning manufacture, stocking, sale and also use of disposable or non-recyclable plastic items is a right step.

These items have been a hindrance in proper disposal of garbage. The ban will facilitate garbage disposal and will make the city clean. However, the ban should be enforced strictly to have the desired effect.

Welcome decision

The Coimbatore Corporation Council passed a resolution banning manufacture, stocking, sale and use of disposable or non-recycable plastic items in the city. It is a welcome decision. Manufacturers and dealers of such items will be fined heavily. More than anything, creating awareness among students and the public on the menace of plastics through curriculam, media, newspapers, TV and cinema are essential. Some subsidy could be announced to manufacturers of paper bags which are easily disposable.

Sunrise column

I request your newspaper to publish sunrise and other related columns with relation to Coimbatore. Your Chennai, Trichy and other editions do carry this on a regular basis.

This column helps people in many ways.

Technical facilities

Chinniyampalyam, which is located on the Avinashi Road highway, lacks modern technical facilities. It has many schools, factories, textile units and residential areas.

But no internet service providers are willing to provide service to this area. Coimbatore airport is likely to be extended till Chinniyampalayam in the near future. Broad band service providers should take the necessary survey regarding this.

LPG booking

This refers to the report on booking Indane LPG cylinders through SMS (December 9). When I contacted the local agency on December 12 to register my mobile number they said the facility would be available from January 1. Again when I sent an SMS to book the cylinder on January 11 I did not get any booking confirmation. On enquiry the agency said the facility was available only during ‘normal’ working hours. I sent an SMS again at 10.30 a.m. for booking since oral confirmation of delivery in a week’s time has never been honoured. Since I did not get a confirmation for my message, I went to the agency which said the SMS system was still not active.
