Tirupur book fair draws large crowds

TIRUPUR: The 5th edition of Tirupur Book Fair 2008, which began on Friday here at the Town Hall grounds, has been attracting a large number of crowd from various walks of life.

Tirupur Exporters’ Association president A. Sakthivel inaugurated the fair in the presence of Mayor K. Selvaraj. The fair is being organised by Pinnal Book Trust and Bharathi Puthagalayam, which will be on till February 3.

A large number of students turned up on the first day. More than 60 leading publishing houses and sellers are taking part in the exhibition that offers 10 per cent discount on every sale.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sakthivel noted that Tirupur, the knitwear capital of India, was on the forefront in terms of sale of books in the State. “It delights us. Books are best friends and reading is a rich pleasure. It is key to the world of knowledge. All the four editions of the Book Fair have witnessed a good sales and a huge turn out. I hope this will also be a huge success,” he said.

Noting that the export city has nothing to offer in terms of entertainment, Mr. Selvaraj said that reading books would prove to be good entertainment to the people of the city. He lauded the organisers for successfully conducting the fair despite many odds for the past four years.

The Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India secretary, R.S. Shanmugam, who inaugurated the sale, said the Government was encouraging publishing industry in a big way by enhancing prize amount for best books.

Organisers said that more than 50,000 titles on diverse topics are on display. Special efforts have been taken to lure school and college students to the fair in order to encourage reading habit among the young generation.
