THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A State-level steering committee has approved a Rs. 125.86-crore package for the development of civic infrastructure in Thiruvananthapuram city and the suburban panchayat areas of Kazhakuttam, Sreekaryam, Kudappanakunnu, Vattiyoorkavu and Vizhinjam.

The outlay includes Rs.100.69 crore as Central government assistance. The State government and the Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation will contribute Rs. 6.47 crore each, with the balance Rs. 12.23 crore to be mobilised from beneficiaries as their share.

The scheme envisages the development of civic amenities in six colonies — the Harijan Colony and Settlement One Lakh House Colony at Manvila, Balanagar Colony, Varuvilakam Colony, Beemapally, Mannamoola Colony and Kalladimukham Colony.

The project will be taken up in the third phase of the Basic Service for the Urban Poor (BSUP) programme, a component of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission financed by the Union Ministry of Urban Affairs. It involves the construction of 8,565 houses, including 494 multi-storey structures, to rehabilitate financially weaker families in the six colonies. As many as 233 houses will be restored under the scheme.

The steering committee approved an outlay of Rs.104.44 crore for Kochi city.

The package comprises Rs. 52.22 crore as Central government aid, Rs. 20.89 crore as the State government’s contribution and Rs. 19.54 crore as the Corporation’s share. The balance Rs. 11.79 crore is to be raised from beneficiaries.

As many as 575 dwellings are to be constructed as apartments in Asraj Paramb colony, Chirackal colony and Mundamveli Santhan colony. Another 7,510 houses will be built in Kochi, Thripunithura and the suburban areas of Kumbalanghi, Njarakkal, Ilankunnapuzha, Varappuzha, Eloor, Cheranelloor, Kumbalam, Mulavukadu and Thrikkakara.

The scheme seeks to develop basic infrastructure in the colonies.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan presided.
