Training programme for panchayat presidents commences

Getting informed: Panchayat presidents participating in a consultative meeting on National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme at the District Sports Stadium in Krishnagiri on Monday.

Krishnagiri: The two-day training programme on ‘Implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme’ for panchayat presidents and makkal nala paniyalargal commenced here on Monday.

The scheme will be implemented in all 10 blocks in the district from April 1, Collector Santhosh Babu has said.

Objectives

Inaugurating the training programme, the Collector explained to panchayat presidents about the objectives of the scheme, selection of works to be carried out under the NREG Act, payment of beneficiaries, responsibilities of village panchayats, allocation of works and salary to be given for the labourers.

The Centre sponsored scheme would be implemented with 10 per cent contribution from the State Government.

Works such as water conservation, creation of new water harvesting structures, renovation of traditional water bodies including ponds, lakes, ooranis and temple ponds, removal of silt from water bodies, strengthening of bunds and flood control and protection works could be carried out under the scheme. A person would be paid a wage of Rs.80 under the scheme.
