Polluted temple tank

The water in temple tanks is considered sacred and the surrounding area a holy land.

At Tiruchendur, there is a beautiful tank dedicated to the Subramaniya Swamy Temple.

During festivals in Avani and Maasi, deities from the temple are brought for rituals on ‘Theppa Thirunals,’ on completion of which they are placed on a floating dais and taken round the pond.

Recently I had been to the tank for an ancestral ritual. On reaching the eastern bank, I was shocked to notice that males were attending the nature’s call without any shame.

The water of the pond is fully polluted beyond explanation due to misuse by the public such as washing cloths, brushing teeth and spitting.

Now that the ‘Maasi Thiruvzha’ is fast approaching,

I request the authorities concerned whether temple or municipality to get the tank water disinfected with chlorine and clean the surrounding area.

K.K. Krishnamurthy,

Tiruchendur.

Passengers’ woes

The condition of the old bus stand in Tuticorin is gradually worsening. Haphazard parking of buses, free movement of other outside vehicles and wandering of vendors add to the woes of passengers.

They find it difficult to board and alight from buses. Besides, the bus stand lacks proper bays and platforms.

Therefore, I request the authorities concerned to establish bays and platforms and remove illegal encroachments on the premises of the bus stand.

Clear information needed

Two months ago, I applied for a broadband connection from the BSNL and the line was given on January 23, 2008, around 17:30 hours.

According to the plan which I opted, the monthly free limit for data transfer (download / upload) is 1.5 GB and the free calls admissible on the landline is 175 calls a month.

On the very next day, when I checked the usage of broadband of my account I was shocked to see that a fee of Rs.200 was added to my account towards the excess usage of broadband.

When I contacted the BSNL customer care call centre, they said that even though I got the broadband connection at the near-end of the month, I could use the full 1.5 GB limit of internet and 175 free calls. But later I came to know from the respective BSNL officer that the information given by the call centre agent was wrong and I could use only part of the free limit from the date of activation of broadband up to the end of that month.

In my case nine days part of free limit.

Hence, I was charged for the remaining usage.

This is highly demoralising on the part of the BSNL.

Enforce surprise checks

With two-wheelers of all brands being on sale on zero interest or on easy instalments, now not only on urban roads but also suburban roads are teeming with vehicles with or without valid driving licence.

All hit-and-run vehicles are ridden by boys of two-wheelers without a driving licence.

Surprise checks should be carried out on weekly basis and every rider must carry driving licence.

Helmets should also be worn by them. This measure will reduce accidents to a large extent.

V. Kumar,

Thekkurichy.
