In Paramakudi, there is an old sewage pumping station with less capacity. The excess sewage enters into the Vaigai river and contaminates drinking water. A sewage treatment plant is very much needed here. Will the authorities establish a sewage pumping station with higher capacity? V. Rajendran, Paramakudi Cement saleIt is clarified that cement at Rs.200 a bag will be sold through the 209 taluk godowns of the Tamil Nadu State civil supplies corporation (The Hindu, January 13) and that people have to apply and get permit from the Tahsildar. The cost involved in making frequent visits to the Tahsildar office to know the status of application and successfully secure the necessary permit and the ‘expenses’ involved at the office as well as in bringing the cement bags from the far off godowns may, in many cases, offset the small gain available compared with buying cement directly from the nearby authorised dealers. Influence may also play its part at the official level depriving the genuine people of their claim for the low-cost cement. As in the case of ration rice smuggling, it may be no surprise if there is large-scale siphoning off. It is better for one and all if the general price of cement in brought down by taking adequate steps at the government level. One commodity, one price. G. K. S. Kandasubramanian,
Sivaganga Condition of roadsMany roads and streets have been badly damaged during the process of underground drainage work undertaken in Ramanathapuram. In places where the work is over, the earth has not been levelled properly. There are sharp ups and downs, potholes and craters causing hardship to the public. There have been scores of complaints from cyclists and two wheelers that the tyres and tubes of their vehicles get punctured frequently due to the bad condition of the roads. The authorities are not bothered about the awful conditions. The contractor must be directed to blacktop the roads and streets as and when the entire work is completed. G. Nagasamy,
Ramanathapuram
