Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: Chief of the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee P. Shanmugam on Sunday glossed over the infighting in the Congress by referring to reports that the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues had denied any rift. Mr. Shanmugam told reporters here that the Congress high command was aware of the goings on in the party in the Union Territory. He would be apprising them of the recent developments during his visit to Delhi on February 10. He criticised activists who took to streets and burnt effigies of Congress leaders. “Burning effigies is a mean act, irrespective of the fact who is involved in it. These persons are not Congressmen. They have not sought the PCC’s permission to hold such protests.” Asked about the demonstration staged by a section of the Congress activists under the leadership of the Puducherry Youth Congress president near the office of the Director General of Police, he attributed such problems to the appointment of functionaries for different wings simply because they were loyal to certain leaders. He dubbed these protests “stage-managed.” Replying to a query on five Ministers calling on the Lieutenant Governor Mukut Mithi on Saturday, he said there was nothing wrong in the meeting. “What is wrong in Ministers meeting the Lt.Governor independently and collectively?” Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and the Ministers had already made it clear that they had cordial relations, he said, adding that the AICC spokesman had also clarified that there was no proposal to shift the Chief Minister. Replying to questions related to Congress Rajya Sabha Member and AICC general secretary V. Narayanasamy’s recent remarks in Delhi about the allocation of funds for the construction of a government medical college in the Chief Minister’s constituency, Mr. Shanmugam said the party functionary should not have rushed to the press.
