Legal services group for people living with HIV/AIDS
Staff Reporter
NAMAKKAL: Namakkal District Legal Services Authority has launched a Legal Services and AIDS Awareness Core group to raise legal awareness among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA).
The group comprises five National Service Scheme volunteers studying in colleges, five persons living with HIV/AIDS (two of them were working as counsellors in Anti-Retroviral Therapy centre), two representatives from non-governmental organisations, two panel lawyers and a legal aid staff.
The group would conduct programmes to educate people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) about human rights and property rights. The group would focus on raising awareness in the rural areas. It would also help PLHAs to form self-help groups and take up self-employment activities.
It would also help the PLHAs to get timely treatment.
Steps would also be initiated through the group to remove the social stigma and discrimination attached to HIV/AIDS.
Principal District Judge A. Rathinavel inaugurated the group. He appealed to the district administration to provide necessary assistance for the members of the group in conducting awareness programmes. Collector G. Sundaramurthi spoke.
Additional District Judge Karpurasundaram, judicial officials and senior lawyers were present at the function.
