State ready to cope with bird flu outbreak: panel Rapid action force to be trained THIRUVANATHAPURAM: The State-level emergency committee on animal diseases on Monday decided to screen poultry and poultry products from neighbouring States for avian influenza. It also decided to send droppings and other samples from congregations of migratory birds for analysis. The Animal Husbandry Department will be in charge of these measures and training of a rapid action force. The committee, which reviewed the preparedness of the State for handling an emergency related to bird flu, directed the departments concerned to stock protective gears for the members of the rapid action force, equipment and anti-septic lotions. The committee concluded that the State was ready to meet any emergency arising from an outbreak of bird flu. Coordinated action by various departments was needed. The Health and Animal Husbandry Department should undertake measures to create awareness about precautionary measures. Director of Animal Husbandry R. Vijayakumar urged that anyone noticing unusual deaths of chicken or birds should report them to the nearest veterinary hospital or to the emergency control room (Phones: 0471 3656288 and 0471 2302283). The committee would meet again to review the progress of actions decided upon on Monday. The committee is headed by the Health Secretary. Secretary (Animal Husbandry) is its convenor. Heads of departments of Animal Husbandry, Health, Medical Education, Finance, Local Self Government, Taxes and Forests are members.
