CPI(M) list review today

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The list of delegates from Thiruvananthapuram district to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) State conference being held at Kottayam from February 11 to 14 would be reviewed and revised at a meeting here on Tuesday.

The delegates who had attended the district conference, held in the last week of December, will attend the meeting at AKG Centre. The only agenda before the meeting is the review of the delegates’ list as instructed by the party Polit Bureau. The party units in the district are to be represented at the State conference by 36 delegates. At the district party meet, a consensus list of 36 persons was presented. However, there was a contest resulting in the defeat of 11 of them.

The Polit Bureau had found the contest to be the result of factionalism and instructed the party State unit to take corrective action by reconvening the delegates to the district conference and getting the consensus list presented to the conference formally adopted.

This is for the first time anything of this kind is happening. The Polit Bureau decision is being seen as a decisive intervention to check factional tendencies in the party. Although there was demand for review of the election of the party district committee, it was met with stiff resistance from the victorious side.

The matter is likely to come up for discussion only after the State conference and, possibly, the CPI(M) 19th Party Congress are over. That might also see the election of the Kollam district committee also being subjected to a closer scrutiny.
