NAGAPATTINAM: The direct purchase centres in Nagapattinam district have so far procured 37,000 tonnes of samba paddy.

A senior official of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation said the procurement gathered pace on Monday after two days of holiday.

The corporation opened 221 centres in the district, offering Rs.825 a quintal for Grade A variety and Rs.795 for common variety with moisture content up to 17 per cent. The price included an incentive of Rs.100 a quintal. He said the average arrival at the centres was 5,000 tonnes a day.

The corporation had enough money and gunny bags of 35-kg capacity to buy the maximum quantity of paddy.

Agriculture Department officials said the samba paddy harvest was picking up in the Mayiladuturai region where the crop was raised early. The harvest had been completed on 35,000 hectares out of the 1.07 lakh hectares covered this year.

The yield came down as the heavy rain that lashed last month affected the crop during the flowering stages.

The average yield was 2.80 tonnes per hectare as against the anticipated six tonnes.

Farmers in the district have appealed to the Government to disburse the compensation for the crop loss.
