BRAOU to open more study centres

The university wants to concentrate on rural and tribal areas

VISAKHAPATNAM: Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Open University is planning to open 25 to 30 more study centres in order to improve enrolment in distance mode of education as a part of efforts to bring the higher education percentage to 15 as envisaged in the 11th Five-Year Plan, O.R. Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, has said.

Addressing a press conference at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University Centre at Dr. V.S. Krishna Government College here on Monday, he said in Telangana and Rayalaseema the enrolment was good and was relatively less in north coastal region perhaps owing to the availability of Andhra University’s correspondence courses. By opening new centres, the university want to increase the enrolment by 50 per cent from the present 1.64 lakhs. New centres are likely to come up in the north coastal and West Godavari districts. Areas like Narsipatnam have good potential. Dr.Reddy said the university wanted to concentrate on rural and tribal areas. The higher education percentage in tribal areas was 7.4 per cent and the university would explore the possibility of improving it with the by opening centres wherever Integrated Tribal Development Agencies were located. A proposal to open a regional centre in Vizianagaram was under consideration.

Besides, setting up of zonal centres for four to five districts was also under consideration. Cultural activities and sports would also be introduced in study the centres.

The Rehabilitation Council of India had selected Bhojpur University in Madhya Pradesh for special education training courses. The BRAOU would get the material available in English and Hindi translated into Telugu so that it could be used anywhere. College in-charge principal P. Koteswara Rao was present.
