Child worker loses fingers in spinning mill

P. Sudhakar

TIRUNELVELI: A child who was allegedly forced to work in a spinning mill near here without the knowledge of her parents lost her fingers in an accident that took place in the unit. The 14-year-old Dalit girl, P. Ambika, of Old Pettai, was allegedly lured by an official of the mill at Vaagaikulam to work along with some other girls of her age when her father P. Paulraj, a mason, was out of station. As she was feeding cotton into a machine on January 6, four of her fingers of the right hand got chopped off. She was taken to a private hospital at Kokkirakulam.

“Since I had gone to my workplace, I could not prevent my daughter from going to the spinning mill for Rs. 40 a day. When I tried to file a police complaint, I was prevented by the mill authorities. My daughter was forcibly discharged from the hospital around 12.30 p.m. on January 8,” said Mr. Paulraj.
