TIRUNELVELI: Deserving students from minority communities may apply for educational assistance since the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs has decided to extend a helping hand to 2,676 students from Tamil Nadu during 2007-2008. Thirty per cent of the total allocation will go to girl students from low income group families. If the officials cannot identify deserving girl students, the assistance reserved for girl students will go to boys.. According to Collector G. Prakash, the educational assistance will be provided to 1,372 Muslims, 1,496 Christians, each four Sikhs and Buddhists, if they applicants have got 50 per cent marks in the previous annual examination and regular attendance to the school / college. Applicants, whose parents’ or guardians’ annual income does not exceed Rs. 2 lakh from all sources, must not have received any educational assistance from the Backward Class Welfare Department during 2007-2008. An affidavit on the income should be submitted by the parents / guardians in Rs.20-worth non-judicial stamp paper along with the application. Stringent legal action will be taken against the parents / guardians, who intentionally hide their income particulars in the affidavit. While Plus One and Plus Two students will get an assistance of Rs. 7,000 towards admission, tuition and hostel fees for a year or the actual annual fees whichever is less, the applicants in the vocational courses equivalent to Plus One and Plus Two (ITI, polytechnic etc.) will get Rs.10,000 or the actual annual fees whichever is less. The undergraduate and postgraduate students will get Rs.3,000.A monthly assistance of Rs.235 for Plus One, Plus Two, ITI, polytechnic hostel students and Rs.140 for others will be given. This assistance will be Rs. 355 for undergraduate and postgraduate hostel students and Rs.185 for others. Research hostel students will get Rs.510 as monthly allowance and this aid will be Rs.330 for others. For details, students may visit www.minorityaffairs.gov. in/newsite/ and forward their applications to their headmasters or principals before January 31 and the heads of the institutions should send the applications to the District Backward Class and Minorities Welfare Officer before February 10.
