Health drive on in Virudhunagar
Staff Reporter
VIRDHUNAGAR: ‘Health is in our hand,’ an awareness campaign to prevent diseases by keeping the surroundings clean, began in the district on Monday. It will conclude on February 12.
Officials of municipalities, town panchayats and panchayats would advise people not to litter the surroundings with coconut shells and unused tyres or leave decorative pots in the open to prevent mosquito breeding in the water stagnating in them, the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said in a statement.
The Collector asked the officials to rear guppies, a fish specie that lives on mosquito larvae, to nip the mosquito menace in the bud. Besides mass cleaning programmes, the sanitary workers had been asked to place oil balls in stagnant water.
Stating that unprotected water was the root cause of stomach ailments and diseases such as cholera, typhoid and malaria, the Collector directed the Block Development Officers to ensure that all overhead tanks in the rural areas were cleaned on the last day of every month.
