Land being acquired for elephant corridors
Special Correspondent
They are either closed or becoming narrow
Udhagamandalam: The Forest department is in the process of acquiring land for widening elephant corridors in the Nilgiris, said District Forest Officer, Nilgiris North M.Mohammed Iqbal Basha here.
Due to a number of factors including mushrooming of resorts near forest areas, elephant corridors were either closed or becoming very narrow. But the Government was taking steps to protect them.
Land acquisition was among the measures being taken and either lands adjoining the corridors would be taken over through negotiation or through compulsory acquisition, he told presspersons.
An ad-hoc committee headed by the Collector had been formed. Farmers owning lands along the Kallar-Jakkanarai corridor agreed to give 77 acres.
Pointing out that they would be suitably compensated, he said 321 acres had been identified along the Moyar-Singara-Kallatty corridor.
