dated January 29, 1958: Baghdad pact

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, the British Foreign Secretary, said in Ankara on January 27 that “our constant aim must always be to reduce East-West tension and to seek agreement with the Soviet Union wherever and whenever this can be achieved without surrender of our vital interests.” He was addressing the opening session of the Ministerial Council of the Baghdad Pact. Mr. Lloyd added: “The latest Russian proposal is for a meeting of heads of Governments. It is obvious that agreement can only be reached if there is discussion between the two sides. Therefore, of course, we are not opposed to talking to the Russians. We have had repeated conferences and discussions with them for many years in the United Nations and elsewhere. What matters is that concrete and sensible results should be achieved,” Mr. Lloyd told delegates from Iraq, Turkey, etc. Mr. John Foster Dulles, United States Secretary of State, is also attending.
