DUBAI: Egypt and the Palestinian group Hamas appear to have arrived at an understanding to re-establish control over the Gaza-Sinai border. On Monday, Hamas and Egyptian authorities could be seen stringing barbed wire at the Brazil gate of the Rafah border which separates Gaza from Egypt. At the Salah Eddin gate, both sides were involved in controlling traffic. Hamas security personnel have been positioned on the Gazan side to stop civilians from crossing over. However, trucks laden with supplies are being allowed to enter Gaza. On the Egyptian side, there have been reports that authorities established checkpoints and other barriers to prevent supplies from reaching Rafah. With shops nearly empty and prices skyrocketing 10 times, Palestinians who had crossed over from Gaza in droves since January 23 are returning to the coastal strip in large numbers. Earlier, Hamas had declared that the old system of manning the border was “history.” Hamas said that it objected to the two-year old system because it allowed Israel to monitor the border using cameras and computers. “We don’t accept a continued Israeli veto on the movement, the exit and entry through Rafah,” said Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on Sunday. Meanwhile, Iran, a close ally of Hamas, had offered to help Egypt deal with the situation. The offer was made on Sunday by a top Iranian diplomat, Ali Asghar Mohammadi, who was on a visit to Cairo.
