Fancied names disappoint

Special Correspondent

JAMSHEDPUR: Coming after a lay-off, some of the fancied names of the Indian archery took a beating on the opening day of the 28th senior National archery championship at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Monday.

National women’s recurve champion Dola Banerjee, who won the top prize in the World Cup finals at Dubai in November, finished second in the 70m event and failed to find a place in the top three in the 50m.

Similarly, National men’s compound champion Ch. Lenin of Andhra Pradesh failed to win a medal in the 90 and 70m events.

Services’ Chungda Sherpa was the best in the 90m with 326 while Umesh B. Kuvathekar of Madhya Pradesh topped in the 70m with 343 out of 360 points.

Pranitha shines

The day’s silver-lining was the emergence of cadet world recurve silver medallist, V. Pranitha of Steel Plant Sports Board. Pranitha took the silver medal in the 60m event and finished at the bronze medal place in the 70m.

Pranitha is the top bet in the world junior and cadet championship India would be hosting later this year.

A couple of off-the-field actions too caught the eye. The Keenan Stadium, venue of Indian round competition, saw arrows going through four to five target faces thus delaying the programme.

The other interesting happening was the presence of three factions from Tamil Nadu arriving to participate. Instead of sending the teams back, the Archery Association of India (AAI) allowed the archers to take part under its banner in the largest interest of the sport and decided to send its secretary general to Chennai on February 3 to sort out the matter.

The results:

Recurve: Women: 70m: 1. L. Bombayla Devi (Rly) 320 points, 2. Dola Banerjee (Rly) 316, 3. V. Pranitha (SP) 316. 60m: 1. Reena Kumari (Rly) 335, 2. Pranitha 333, 3. Bombayla 332.

Compound: Men: 90m: 1. Chungda Sherpa (Ser) 326, 2. L. Haridas (Ser) 33, 3. N. Arun Kumar (AP) 320. 70m: 1. Umesh B. Kuvathekar (MP) 343, 2. Ratan Kumar (Ser) 342, 3. Isiah R. Sanam (AP) 340.

Indian round: Men: 50m: 1. Uttam Kesri (Ser) 325, 2. Orkay Basumatary (Asm) 321, 3. Anand Wankhade (Tri) 321.
