NEW DELHI: G. N. Gopal let 21st seed and Norway’s first Grandmaster Simen Agdestein escape with a draw in the sixth round of Gibtelecom Masters chess tournament at Gibraltar on Sunday. Gopal had a good position in the Ruy Lopez game but a sudden fascination for a rook-move on the 36th turn helped Agdestein, the 1986 World junior runner-up and coach of Norway’s wonderboy Magnus Carlsen, increase the chances of a draw. Peace was signed after 47 moves. D. Harika was the lone Indian winner on this day after she won in 41 moves against England’s Gary Quillan. China’s Bu Xiangzhi led the field with 5.5 points. The results (involving Indians): Sixth round: Sandipan Chanda (4.5) drew with Robert Bellin (Eng, 4.5); G.N. Gopal (4) drew with Simen Agdestein (Nor, 4.5); Gary Quillan (Eng, 3) lost to D. Harika (4); N. Srinath (3) lost to Wang Yu (Chn, 4); Aarthie Ramaswamy (3) drew with Oleg Kozlov (Rus, 3); Kruttika Nadig (2.5) lost to Lasse Ostebo Lovik (Nor. 3.5).
