Solid waste must be segregated Spitting, urination in public to invite a fine of Rs. 50 CHENNAI: Residents may henceforth have to be very cautious while disposing of garbage or they may be asked to pay a fine by the Chennai Corporation. The civic body will soon have a detailed set of municipal solid waste rules to tackle the increasing amount of garbage generated in the city. A draft of the rules is expected to be presented before the Corporation Council for its approval at a meeting scheduled for Thursday. Spitting, urination and defecation in public places would attract a fine of Rs. 50. Solid waste should be segregated into wet biodegradable waste, hazardous domestic waste, biomedical waste, construction debris, garden waste and all other dry waste. The waste should be collected and deposited in the Corporation’s collection vehicles or in community bins. A fine of Rs. 100 would be charged per household for failure to segregate biodegradable waste. A fine of Rs. 500 has been proposed for those who fail to separate biomedical and hazardous waste. Establishments that produce such waste in large quantities should deposit the segregated waste in designated areas. Failure to do so would attract a penalty of Rs. 500. Burning of garbage could also invite a fine of Rs. 500.
