Thiruvananthapuram: The Muslim Employees Cultural Association (MECA) demanded that minority status be accorded to educational institutions only if 50 per cent of the students and staff belong to the minority communities. The MECA, which made the submission before the Minority Education Monitoring Committee of the Union Human Resources Ministry here on Monday, also called for continuous monitoring of minority institutions run with public funds or under the UGC’s control to ensure that they were functioning in a manner which was beneficial to the minorities. It also called for setting up a separate directorate and assistance for madrassa education since it had been accepted as a parallel system of education. The memorandum was submitted by a delegation led by its president M. Aliyarukutty.
