VIZIANAGARAM: Reconciliation of the irrigated area under minor and medium irrigation sources has been completed in the district. The irrigated area assessment was taken up following instructions from the Special Commissioner (Land Administration). The Special Commissioner last month pointed out variations in figures reported by Irrigation, Agriculture and Revenue Departments and asked the Joint Collectors to complete reconciliation of actual irrigated area and begin water tax collection from farmers in each district. The exercise, according to revenue officials, is to improve tax collection and transfer the grants to water user associations for maintenance of irrigation system. An amount of Rs. 100 per acre per year under minor irrigation and Rs. 200 per acre per year under medium irrigation sources would be collected. According to reconciliation figures, the extent of area irrigated under medium irrigation dropped from 95,508 acres to 89,759 acres and under minor irrigation it fell from1,12,292 acres to1,06,700 acres in the district. The amount of water tax due was about Rs 15 crore. Of the amount Rs. 2.50 crores was collected till Dec 31, the sources said.
